Mud Hero 2017

Updated: Sep 14, 2019

getting muddy with friends

Mud Hero is Canada's largest obstacle course event. It involves mud, of course. It is a once a year summer event and there's Mud Hero in several provinces. The Ultra 10 Kilometer course covers 18++ obstacles and so much more. It is a really fun activity that you can do with your friends.

My friends told me about this Mud Hero thing and we thought it was a good idea to join and have fun. We had to buy admissions a few months early as it is cheaper than buying it closer to the day of the event.

This year's Mud Hero was held in Ski Martock which is a ski resort in Windsor, Nova Scotia. This was in July 8, 2017 which was a perfect day for the event. We challenged ourselves to take the Ultra 10 Kilometer course.

My friend's husband took some videos and photos of us. We were so lucky we were able to document this experience. He only covered a few obstacle courses because some are inaccessible.

We called our group "The Asian Squad". We wore sleeveless tops, shorts, similar leggings and went for a braided hairstyle to identify us as a group. With this activity, I knew I was going to be all muddy based on the photos I saw online so I decided to wear an older running shoes. You have the option to take your muddy shoes to the donation booth.

We made sure to eat breakfast hours before the even so that we have enough energy because 10K is not easy.

The race started around 2:30 PM if I remember correctly. There were several obstacle courses. We had to go through a Muddy Lagoon first. It's a waist high mud water. Even if it was a sunny day, the water was pretty cold. In the following paragraphs, I will try to describe each obstacle course. I don't have photos of all of the courses so I will just recount those with photos.

The Snakeline

This was a pretty easy obstacle. You can crawl, walk or shimmy your way across the slacklines suspended above this water pit. You also have to be careful or you can go for a drink. I was scared to crawl and fall so I just walked. The water was not too high so I just had to hold on to the rope. This was just the start of the course and we were already muddy.

King Kong

This 15-foot-high giant structure was pretty scary for me. We had to climb up the slanted wall using the ropes provided, crawl across the cargo net, then descend down the other side. Positioning yourself from the cargo net to climb down was pretty difficult but my friend helped me and provided instructions on how to do it.

to the woods we go

We had to go through the woods a few times. This was not my favorite. I felt like we were walking forever. Although there are guides on where we should go, the walking trail wasn't exactly flat. I had to be careful not to trip on something or sprain my ankle. It was pretty exhausting already but we still have to finish the race to get the medal.

The Avalanche - This was something that I failed to do. You will need to use speed and agility to get over the Avalanche. I could not lift myself up. I believe we were only allowed 2-3 tries. After that, we can take the easy lane. I got frustrated with myself but at least I got my photo taken.

The Mud Slide - This was something I looked forward in doing. You have to slide down to a mud pit. The Mud Pit wasn't very deep. I believe the depth of the mud water was just right above my chest. However, you'll definitely get muddy from head to toe. This was also pretty refreshing as the water was cold.

There were a lot of obstacles that we don't have photos with but we got some on video. There was also a part where we can choose to either carry a 25 lb or 50 lb sandbag through a hilly section of course. There were pretty hard obstacles but the hardest was climbing up the hill. It was very exhausting. We had to stop to rest before walking up the hill again. The hill was so steep and there were times that I had to crawl up because I was so tired.

There were water stations in between the courses and the volunteers gave out bottled water to participants. I believe we finished the entire 10K in almost 4 hours. We were not there to compete but we were to have fun. If you want to ask if we peed during the course, we were already soaking wet. Washroom was not needed. We peed while walking and then washed it water! It won't be obvious. I'm pretty sure the other participants were doing the same too.

We got our Mud Hero medals in the finish line. There is an open shower area where you can wash yourselves together with the other participants. I would suggest bringing shampoo, soap and also Q tips for your ears. You will be surprised with the amount of dirt in your ears. The mud will be in all parts of your body. Of course I had to shower again at home and also soaked my body in the tub. I had to do it a few times.

The next day, when I woke up, all parts of my body were sore. I walked funny too. However, it was all worth it. I had a lot of fun and it was also fun editing our videos.
